James 1:25 But if you look carefully into the perfect law that sets you free, and if you do what it says and don’t forget what you heard, then God will bless you for doing it.
The ‘perfect law’ is not the Ten Commandments. For awhile, I did not understand the difference between the law and the perfect law. The Ten Commandments is the law for the unbeliever. It is the placeholder before one accepts Christ. The fallacy in it is that it is impossible for humans to keep. That is why so many sacrifices were required for those living by the law.
The ‘perfect law’ requires being a believer. As a believer, we have accepted the perfect sacrifice, Jesus, and as such have been given the Holy Spirit (Who knows the mind of God). We then choose to become Spirit-led by following the voice and promptings of the Holy Spirit and deciding to obey. The perfection of this law is that grace abounds: just as we did nothing to earn right-standing with God, we can do nothing to lose it. While obeying the Spirit results in a better quality of life and those who truly love Christ obey His new commands, our shortcomings do not change our position with God.
