Jeremiah 17:5 This is what the Lord says: “Cursed is the one who trusts in man, who draws strength from mere flesh and whose heart turns away from the Lord. 6 That person will be like a bush in the wastelands; they will not see prosperity when it comes. They will dwell in the parched places of the desert, in a salt land where no one lives.

The Lord is meant to be our Provider and our Savior. When we take it upon ourselves to provide for able-bodied adults, we assume the role of provider and savior and position that person to never receive their own prosperity.

When that friend or family asks you for your resources, rather than reacting from guilt or obligation, or from selfishness or greed, consult God first. Allow God to dictate when, how much, and what to give, be willing to give or not to give, and allow that person the opportunity to trust in God.
