Psalms 116:7 NIV Return to your rest, my soul, for the Lord has been good to you.

We are spirits. We possess a soul and we live in a body. The spirit and soul are not the same. Our soul primarily consists of our mind and emotions.

When negative circumstances come, our soul (our mind and emotions) can become disturbed. Our soul may panic when we think about the economy or when we hear a negative report from the doctor. Our soul may become unsettled when we hear reports about school shootings and we think about our children.

When our soul is not at rest, we must first recognize that our attention is focused on the wrong things. We’re focused on our finances, our health, and the safety of our children, but if our attention was focused on God and His word, we’ll be kept in perfect peace (Isaiah 26:3).

Secondly, we must reel our thoughts and emotions in by magnifying the truth in God’s word over what we see and hear in the world. By consistently meditating on God’s word, His word will become more real to us than what we see or hear in the world.

Finally, it’s important to think about the goodness of God. When we think about His goodness, we’ll recognize how He easily handled the things that worried us in the past. If He’s done it before, He’ll do it again.

When things become unsettling, instruct your soul to be at rest. Keep it at rest by focusing on God’s word and His goodness.
