Matthew 10:1 And when He had called unto Him His twelve disciples, He gave them power against unclean spirits to cast them out, and to heal all manner of sickness and all manner of disease.

Jesus gave us (His followers) authority over demonic spirits. That means any demonic influences within a person, we have the authority and capability to remove. There’s one caveat. No one can override another person’s free will.

So, if a person likes what that unclean spirit is producing in their flesh, we can “in the name of Jesus” that spirit all day long, but it won’t work.

For instance, demonic influences encourage people to smoke. When a person smokes, they may like how it makes them feel to the point where they don’t want to quit. We can’t override their will and make them quit in Jesus’ name. It won’t work unless they want to quit. The same thing applies to excessive drinking, sexual sins, drugs, overeating, or any other bad habit.

So, what are we to do? Continue to bind demonic influences within that person and loose ministering spirits that will hopefully encourage that person to want to quit (Matthew 16:19).

Don’t be discouraged. Our God-given authority over demons still works. It’s just some people simply have no desire to stop something that’s negatively impacting their lives.
