Exodus 34:7 NKJV keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, by no means clearing the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children and the children’s children to the third and the fourth generation.”
Prior to Jesus, we were punished for our sins that weren’t forgiven and for the sins of previous generations.
People read this verse and ran with the term “generational curses.” People thought they were cursed with this issue or that problem based on the sins of their ancestors.
The reason why they accepted these curses was because they didn’t understand the magnitude of what Jesus has done.
Romans 3:24 NLT Yet God, in his grace, freely makes us right in his sight. He did this through Christ Jesus when he freed us from the penalty for our sins.
Galatians 3:13-14 NKJV Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us (for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree”), that the blessing of Abraham might come upon the Gentiles in Christ Jesus, that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.
1 John 4:10 NLT This is real love—not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as a sacrifice to take away our sins.
Thanks to Jesus, He paid the price and took on the punishment for all sin (past and present). No sin was left out.
So, we don’t have to accept the alcoholism that runs in our family or the sexual sins of former generations. When we accepted Jesus as Lord and Savior, we need to accept that He paid for every single sin.
Thank God for Jesus who was the ultimate sacrifice for sin.
