Praying, reading the bible, and attending church are all spiritual activities that we should be doing. But like everything else, we need to make sure we do these things as the Spirit leads and not out of the flesh.
If we’re praying, reading the bible, and attending church to “get blessed,” we’re performing in the flesh because God’s word says we’re already blessed (Gal. 3:14). If we’re doing these things so that God is pleased with us, we’re performing in the flesh because God is already pleased with us (Ps. 147:11). If we’re doing any of these spiritual activities to get God to do something He’s already done or already said about us, we’re doing it out of our flesh.
The Holy Spirit will tell us when to fast, pray, read the bible, etc. He’ll tell us when to start and stop too. If we’re not sensitive to the Holy Spirit, we’ll be praying when the Holy Spirit is instructing us to sleep, work, or spend time with our families.
These activities are designed to draw us closer to God or deepen our relationship with Him. By default, we’ll get the answers we’re looking for or the comfort we need, but our intent is intimacy with Him. Be sure EVERYTHING we do, including spiritual activities, is Holy Spirit led.
Galatians 5:16 NKJV I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.
