But this is what you must do: Tell the truth to each other. Render verdicts in your courts that are just and that lead to peace. Don’t scheme against each other. Stop your love of telling lies that you swear are the truth. I hate all these things, says the Lord.” -Zechariah 8:16‭-‬17 NLT

God desires for us to tell the truth. It doesn’t matter if it makes us look bad or could potentially hurt someone else’s feelings. We should tell the truth.

A lot of times, people lie because they’re afraid. They’re afraid of how they’ll be viewed after telling the truth. When we’re not concerned about the opinions of others and make no reputation of ourselves, we’ll tell the truth because it’s the right thing to do.

When telling the truth, it should be done in love (Eph. 4:15). Our goal is not to hurt people’s feelings or make them feel small, but the truth is necessary. We should love the person to the point where we can be honest with them. Even if we don’t love them, we should love God enough to follow His instructions and tell everyone the truth.

Side Note: When we lie, we take on the nature of Satan who is the father of lies (John 8:44).
