We often fill up our lives with sound. We wake up to an alarm, we converse with our family, we listen to something on the way to work, and we chit chat at work. Even when we’re spending time with God, most of the time we’re doing all the talking, we’re listening to a sermon, or we’re worshipping with song.

There’s nothing wrong with communicating with people, listening to music, or talking with God, but sometimes it’s beneficial for us to be silent before the Lord. Since we’ve been so preconditioned to have sound, it may seem weird to have silence, but it’s fruitful.

If we take 15 to 20 minutes to be silent before the Lord, we will clearly hear God. We could get an answer to our prayers, an encouraging word, guidance in raising our children, or direction on next steps in our career.

We can be silent in the presence of God the moment we wake up. We can be silent on our drive to work. We can be silent when everyone falls asleep at night. Just be sure to silence yourself and your surroundings so that you can clearly hear the voice of God.
